Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Students with Disabilities are so much more capable than they realize, especially during their middle school years. They often lack confidence and are afraid to try after years of frustrating challenges. It is such an important time in the development of their self-esteem.
They benefit from earned rewards that inspire them to demonstrate academic strategies that will provide them with a feeling of success and build habits that will benefit them throughout their lives.
I have asked the students what rewards they want. These edible treats are the most popular of their choices. By providing them with prizes that they have requested, a sense of trust and respect is developed between myself and the students. This allows them to try things they may not have tried in the past, because of preconceptions about what their abilities are. These rewards will help them build skills and see how much they are capable of, building their confidence and self-esteem. As this grows and they feel success, they are then ready to start engaging their own internal motivations. I have seen students grow and flourish with this reward system.
This reward system involves a weekly drawing, where one or two students from each class win a prize. Throughout the week, I give students tickets when they are demonstrating positive academic behaviors. This immediate positive feedback reinforces these behaviors, and confirms what they look like. It is tailored for each students' needs. A student may earn a ticket by volunteering an answer, sitting quietly rather than getting up multiple times during the class, helping a peer, focusing on taking notes rather than talking, or listening and following directions. At the end of the week they are excited to see who will win the prize when I draw from the tickets they have earned.
