I teach theater in a Title I elementary school in East New York, Brooklyn. I work with a diverse population of students throughout the day. Our school is a mosaic of cultures. Acting is a way to teach English Language learners and special needs students. The science teacher and I recognize that theater is way to explore science concepts for those children in language acquisition mode.
As a teacher I'm challenged to come up with innovative lessons to meet the needs of all my students.
This year theater and science will be producing movies and productions. We need to acquire the right supplies to make this happen.
My Project
This year I'm designing a theater program that supports and extends our science environmental thematic units. Many of my students are in 3rd and 4th grade which are NY state science test prep grades. I also have Kindergarten and Special Education classes who are also learning about the amazing ecosystems of our world. I need hands-on materials for theater activities that support the science curriculum and help me teach fun and important theater skills.
My students will use the Apple Air tablet to research different ecosystems and use the costumes to create their own plays about animals and their habitats.
We'll use the puppets for role playing and language acquisition.
