We need 70 books (National Geographic Kids Everything Money: A wealth of facts, photos, and fun!, The Lemonade War, and Amelia Bedelia Means Business) about economics to help us learn more about the financial world around us.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
When one teaches, two learn. Elbert Heinlein What an awesome way to learn but from each other! My students would share what they read as we go through the books. We want to learn together about economics!
In my career preparedness class, we have been learning about economics and what it means. Still at an eighth grade level, it is really hard to understand the economics of the world at a young age. My kids were struggling with the understanding, so I begin to search way to help them understand better. While searching, I ran across these books about economics, and they were written on an eighth grade reading level, plus they were interesting. I started sharing the sample that I found online with my class, and they were excited to know that there was something out there to help them with the comprehension of economics. So, one of them said how can we get those books, and I started telling them about Donors Choose.
Just being together in groups is an awesome learning experience. They feed off of each other. There is never a time that my students feel like they can't ask a question, because they know there is probably someone sitting right beside them thinking the same thing. With these books, I would like to break them into groups to do read aloud, and then to brainstorm on poster board about what they have learned so far. We could even do a KWL chart: What I know? What I want to know? What have I learned? This is a great way to share together and to be a put of the input. They would be working as a team.
In Their Own Words
I think we are going to accomplish what economics means. I don't really understand what Mrs. C is talking about,so getting these books would help. We have talked about charting our group work, so that everyone will be like they are a part of the group and would have a say in the conversation. I think this is a good idea.
We will be in groups, so I think talking in front of the class about what the book meant to us would be a good learning experience. We could even, with her help, take over the classroom teaching. She talked about using poster board to chart our learning, so we could hang them up around the room. Each person in the group would have a responsibility to share something with the class.
This class is a good opportunity to learn more about economics and how it works. As a student, I don't know a lot. I will gain a better understanding about being a good citizen after I graduate and start looking for a job. Being a good citizen not only helps me but my school and community.
