My Students

Our school is a Title I elementary school located in a socio-economically disadvantaged area of the city.

The student population is primarily African-American.

For most students our school is their haven, a place of safety and security. So often our students face a life that would make most grownups quake in fear and anger. In spite of these disadvantages, these kids are loving, bright, and inquisitive. They love to explore and find answers.

Our 5th graders have been working hard all year in their economics class and in regular class learning that Economics is not just money, but it's businesses and how they work. It's lemonade stands and how many dollars they take in. It's toy collecting and baseball card collections. It's taxes and allowances. It's stocks and bonds. Economics is part of almost everything you could ever think about.

My Project

A. Elementary school has special focus on economics as a curriculum. Students attend economics class once a week beginning in kindergarten. Our students learn factors that determine the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. Every year our 5th graders take an end of the year trip to the Federal Reserve in Kansas City, Missouri. The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City covers the 10th District of the Federal Reserve, which includes Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Wyoming, and portions of western Missouri and northern New Mexico. The Kansas City branch is second only to the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco in size of geographic area served. Students have been studying economics all year and as a 5th grade team we come up with several fund raisers to be able to send our 80 plus students on this trip. With 98% our students’ families qualifying for free or reduced lunch, the chances of asking families to pay for their students’ trip are slim to none.
