My Students

Do you remember being in 8th grade and wondering about the future? Could I be a doctor, teacher, farmer, or maybe even president? In our small town, Title I School, many students do not even know what careers surround them every day.

Middle school students have the same desires for the future that any other youth their age has.

Unfortunately, low socioeconomic can stunt the dreams of some students. At this critical age, 8th grade, it is very important that they begin to plan for the "not-so distant" future. However, many students in this poor, rural community are not even aware of the jobs and career opportunities in their own area

My Project

The book City of Embers is about a society who was forced to live underground, never even going to the surface of the earth. Children are assigned a lifelong career at a very early age, and given no real freedom to choose the direction of their future. That is until someone breaks through and realizes that there is a world of possibility on the surface. 8th Grade students will be reading the book City of Ember, by Jeanne DuPrau. The classroom set of books will allow us be able to read individually and corporately. We will spend 15 minutes at the end of the hour for three weeks, or until we finish reading. Throughout we will be discussing various economic topics as well as career orientation concepts as they arise in the reading. We will discuss opportunity cost while we are learning about goal setting. As we begin to explore the 16 career clusters, we will be able to tie in the book to possible career available to the characters as well as my students.

I want my students to understand that there is a world of possibility outside their small community.

They have the ability to look at their own abilities and interest, and make good decisions that will impact their future. They may be from a low economic community, but it they work hard and get good grades, there are opportunities to follow their dreams. Even the dreams they have not yet dreamed.
