Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year I am teaching AP Biology, Environmental Science, and 3 Co-Taught Biology classes. I teach these 3 courses with a Special Education Teacher so we can help meet the needs of our diverse students. This year I will be advising the Garden Club and Eco Club. My students really care about the environment, gardens, and campus beautification.
To promote environmental stewardship, the Eco Club and Garden Club want to make their own decorative soap with materials from our garden.
Through another project we were able to secure the soap melter, molds, and cutters. As we were doing some trial runs, we believe we need different types of dried petals and soap bases to make the colors pop. The students will cut flowers from our garden as decorative touches to go along with their finished soap. With recycled paper, the students want to make bands to wrap around the soaps they made and they would like to decorate it with the nature stamps and pads.
Creative, artistic and mindfulness projects like these that incorporate nature and environmental stewardship are a great way to get students to connect and care about nature. This also supports their own social and emotional well being.
As the clubs continue to grow we are in desperate need of mobile storage. One of the carts will be used to hold all of our arts and paint supplies, another for soap making supplies, and another for our button badge making station. My club presidents can pull out each cart from our storage room and bring it out to members during club meet ups to work on their respective projects.
The garden club also needs additional watering ollas as the summer approaches for our raised bed on wheels.
