Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In a world that too often silences Black youth, my students are ready to speak up—and out.

I teach 11th grade English at an alternative high school in East St.

Louis. My students have faced more than their fair share of adversity—from systemic inequities and educational barriers to personal trauma and community violence. But despite the odds, they walk into our classroom with brilliance, honesty, heart, and vision. What makes them special isn’t just what they’ve overcome—it’s how fiercely they care about justice, how deeply they think, and how powerfully they express themselves when given the chance.

Now, they’re getting that chance.

With your support, my students will launch Voices Amplified, a student-led podcast that connects the themes in our literature—like resistance in A Lesson Before Dying or finding your voice in The Hate U Give—to the real issues in their lives and communities. From gun violence and poverty to healing, hope, and the power of sisterhood, they will write, record, and share episodes that matter.

Project Goals:

1. Literacy Through Relevance: Strengthen reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through real-world, meaningful content creation.

2. Critical Consciousness: Encourage students to analyze social issues in literature and their community—and imagine solutions.

3. Creative Expression: Provide a platform where students can express themselves authentically through writing, storytelling, and media.

4. Collaboration & Confidence: Foster teamwork and leadership as students plan, produce, and present podcast episodes together.

5. Civic Voice: Empower students to see themselves as change-makers, capable of influencing others through their words.

This project isn’t just about podcast equipment—it’s about purpose. It’s about giving our students the tools to be seen, heard, and respected. It’s about showing them their voices matter—not just in the classroom, but in the world.

Thank you for believing in our students, our stories, and our future.
