Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our HS is reviving a thriving music program. Although the demographics have changed, the school's dedication to music is still strong. In order to provided opportunities for all students to learn music that interests them, we have begun putting together popular Latino musical performance groups.

My students are Latino and African American and live in an inner-city socioeconomically depressed area.

My students are incredibly hard workers and are focused on bringing back our band program to the prominence it once enjoyed. My students enjoy eclectic music tastes and share their music with each other. Many students at my school have begun to put together popular music groups that perform some of the regional music of Latin America, primarily Mexico. All students enjoy the music their peers perform. As the music teacher at our school, I want to invite these students to study music and gain proficiency at their craft. By bringing in instruments typical of these performing groups, I will be able to provide musical study to students who may not be able to afford to purchase these instruments themselves.

My Project

My students have been requesting assistance in getting instruments that they cannot afford to complete the instrumentation for their bands. Having an alto horn at our school will allow students to be able to complete the tone color that these regional latino musical groups require. Additionally, the alto horn will allow the band to begin playing brass band music and give students the opportunity to perform on an instrument that is not readily available to many public schools.

Your help in funding this project will allow our music program and band to continue to diversify and grow to service more students.

Allowing students to express themselves within music is a gift that will continue to grow as generations pass though our school and graduate to college and beyond. Allowing students to more closely study their culture will, additionally, reaffirm their identity and make them stronger citizens in their community.
