Eat What You Sow

My students need plastic containers, seeds, and soil to create vertical gardens with plants they can eat.

My Students

First graders are a terrific age group. They love everything and are super curious to try new ideas. My students live in the inner city in Metro Detroit. Most all of them are living in poverty, with adults struggling to make ends meet and living paycheck to paycheck.

The hardest part of teaching is not being able to provide the same educational experience for my students as my own children had.

These children are our future, the next generation. I want, really want, them to have the knowledge to take care of our planet and the living things upon it!

My Project

Thanks to donors like you, my class has a set of laptops to use and take home to look up ideas anytime they choose. My students will use the internet to see examples of vertical gardens. In groups they will work out a plan and decide which types of food they want to grow.

They will work together to build their gardens and plant their seeds.

They will need to come to school to water on the weekends as well as harvest the crops if all goes according to plan!

This will also engage the family members of the students as they help care for the plants and enjoy the rewards from growing their own food.
