Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My fourth grade scholars come to school eager to learn and stretch their knowledge. I had these same students last year for third grade. Many of them tested as pre- diabetic and obese by the school nurse. We want to start a project titled Be Choosy, Be Healthy. I would like to involve the students in a series of activities that promote healthy nutrition and physical activity. I would also like them to record their learning in a science journal.
My Project
My students wanted to learn more about nutrition after having several nurse emergencies last year. Repeatedly, a student would ask to see the nurse when we came back from lunch, complaining of an upset stomach. The nurse always gave the same diagnosis.."too many hot fries and sweets for lunch." The final straw came during their end of the year physicals. Half the class had high blood pressure, pre- diabetes, and were obese. These same students looped up with me to fourth grade this year. The students indicated that they wanted to improve their health, nutrition, physical strength, and overall wellness.
My students came up with the idea that they would like to use recess time with structured activities.
They also wanted to track their observations and learning daily. The kit that I am requesting contains physical education materials such as parachutes, wrist ribbons and CD's with health enhancing songs. The kit also includes nutrition activities, assessments, and games to encourage healthy behavior.
Finally, the science journals will help the students record their activities, amount of physical activity, pulse, and foods eaten during the day. The journal writing also helps the scholars unite sports and recreation to academic learning.
