My Students
Our school is a small neighborhood school, centrally located in the downtown area. We have just under 400 students from kindergarten through grade 5. Over 60% of the students at our school receive free or reduced-price lunch.
I teach a fifth grade class of 24 students who come from many different backgrounds, including some with little to no access to technology or current reading materials.
One of my goals is to instill in my students a passion for reading, both for pleasure and as a tool for learning. My projects will support this goal as well as the interests of my students.
My Project
Over the years, I have been steadily adding books to our classroom library. Some have come from donations, many I have personally purchased, and others have been funded by grants. I strive to keep the materials in our classroom effectively organized and accessible to my students.
Unfortunately, we have run out of shelf space for all of these amazing resources!
Our reading units of study in fifth grade focus heavily on book clubs, which allow for deep work and conversations but require multiple copies of books in different genres. These books are stored in bins that are organized by categories like topic or genre and reading level. This shelving unit would allow us to keep our text sets readily available without creating clutter in the classroom.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
