My students need an easel to work in differentiated groups. It will be used to model math problems, and demonstrate writing. They will be able to solve math problems using erasable markers.

My Students
My students come from all over the globe searching for the American dream of a better tomorrow. Many would never have an opportunity to academic achievement if they had remained in their home country. The neighborhood the school is situated is in a working poor community of the Bronx. I have a lovely class in an urban elementary school in Bronx, New York where the population of the school is 1,400 and class sizes are at a maximum. My students are diverse in ethnicity and ability.
My Project
In trying to meet their needs, having an easel to instruct and differentiate instructions as well as reteach concepts that are not understood is extremely important in their learning. The only board that is used in the class room is a SmartBoard connected to an out dated computer. When struggling students are grouped together, there is no easel or white board in the classroom to use.
My students are very anxious to learn and are the most helpful kids you would ever meet.
I visualize working with the easel all over the class room where students are grouped that need extra attention and small group instruction. It will be used to model math problems, and demonstrate writing. They will be able to solve math problems using erasable markers.
The benefit of having an easel to demonstrate math, reading and writing activities is important in level the playing field. Working with diverse learners which have academic deficits and language difficulties gathered around the easel as opposed to their desks is that it promotes a sense of community and caring.
So many memorable teaching moments will occur in having an easel in the classroom. I foresee it being an important learning tool in our classroom. I know that the students that are new to our school and need that extra help will have use of an easel that will symbolize academic learning and success.
