This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school in Santa Ana, California where roughly 94% percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our school is a STEAM school and was completed five years ago.

This project will benefit my fourth grade classes of students, as well as future classes for the materials that can be reused.

Due to Covid-19, this traditionally hands-on class that focused on STEAM challenges daily, now only receives Science once a week due to lack of materials. The materials I have acquired for this program are generally only in sets of four and are shared in small groups within the classroom. This will not work for the time being due to the pandemic. Many more materials are needed in order to have every student participate in effective and engaging hands-on engineering investigations. STEAM is one of the costlier disciplines to fund, but well worth every penny. This group of individuals need to continue to receive an education that challenges them by demanding high levels of critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills as students.

My Project

Students will be learning to identify evidence from patterns in rock formations and fossils in rock layers to support an explanation for

the changes in the lands formation.

They will be using the rocks and magnifying glasses together to aid them in the understanding of the difference in time by observing layers in rocks.

Being stuck at home and not having hands on material can be very, very hard for students to grasp the information they are learning. By making them kits with the rocks and other materials provided it will allow them to have that hands on learning through distance learning.

Students who learn through hands on activities recall their learning much easier. It helps to solidify what they are learning and connect it to the real world.
