Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

You know those times when you get a compliment or your hard work paid off and you wanted to tell everyone you met about your success? What if there was a way for all students to show off academic and behavioral achievements (no matter how big or small) and see growth throughout the year?

Our school is a low income school with over 90% of our students receiving free/reduced lunch.

Many of my students are English language learners and have recently come here from other countries. I also have many students that are having their first experience with school in Kindergarten as they did not attend pre-school, so they are learning what school is like and what it is all about.

My Project

I want to be able to reward my students in a way that intrinsically motivates them to be better instead of always wanting something materialistic. I want my students to be able to show off and brag about the skills they have learned and things they can do - kindergarten is after all a grade level with many developmental milestones. My students will learn that all students have talents and are different. My students will also learn to celebrate themselves and others even if the achievement seems easy. I am going to be using brag tags (similar to a dog tag in the military) that have different achievements on them. There are many different tags to choose from or I can customize my own tags before laminating them to put on each students necklace. Students will wear their Brag tags around campus and the classroom to brag about their successes. My students need necklaces, laminating sleeves, cardstock, ink cartridges, organizing cabinets and corkboard strips for our brag tags. We will also be sharing with administration, student services and families so every child feels recognized by stakeholders.

My goal is to have students that are hard working and continually motivated to learn and show off their hard work to all stakeholders.

This project will replace the usual treasure box or other material rewards that are typically seen in classrooms. I hope our brag tags will allow my students to be responsible for their own learning.
