This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In 2009, only 31% of Latino students in California passed the AP English Literature exam. The state average pass rate was 56%. These statistics don't have to apply to my students, and there's a way you can help.

My students, by and large, are from socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods of Los Angeles.

Many of my students will be the first in their families to graduate high school and the first to attend (and graduate) college. They are smart, motivated and hilarious. They make time in my classroom fly by. In fact, time with them doesn't feel like work.

My Project

The AP exam requires a lot of practice, and the AP prep books will provide my students with the practice they need to prepare for the exam. Said books have review lessons and practice tests that model the exam. This resource can help students pass the AP exam and earn upwards of eight units of college credit, which amounts to half a semester's course load.

Because of forces beyond their control, my students are at a disadvantage with AP testing, but it doesn't have to be this way.

This project can help my students pass the AP test and gain the confidence of knowing that they are prepared for college. But this goes beyond my current students. A high pass rate this year will also give lower classmen the confidence that they too can pass the AP exam. Success this year can change school culture. Success for one group will be success for all.
