Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom is filled with reading (including academic vocabulary), math, and language understanding. I firmly believe that every moment is a teachable moment. And that each teachable moment is vital to student success.
My students are 1st graders and primarily English Language Learners.
They come to me eager to learn (with strong parental support) and somewhat insecure in their ability to do so due to language barriers. My school is 98% free and reduced lunch. All students walk to school as we are located centrally in their neighborhood. Our staff believes in the potential of each and every child that enters our doors. We strive to develop good character and good work ethic. College and career readiness are a constant goal of our staff. Our staff provides many extracurricular activities for our students that they would otherwise not have the opportunity to experience. Activities such as guitar lessons, soccer team, drum club, cultural dancing, tennis, and academic tutoring are provided free of charge to our students.
My Project
My students need activities such as board games, puzzles and arts and craft materials at home to aid in thinking skills, creativity and language building skills. Critical thinking skills and creativity are often mastered during play. I believe that providing those opportunities at home is integral in my students' success. Providing students with games, puzzles, and craft materials at home has many benefits. Cooperation, thinking and reasoning skills, and creative problem solving to name a few. Students begin "earning" incentive bucks on the first day of school. These extrinsic incentives may be earned or paid based on academic and character choices. My goal is to have an awards ceremony each quarter. I currently have been able to do this one time per year using my own resources, but feel students this age need to be rewarded more often so the lesson "sticks." Each quarter the student who has earned the most money gets to "shop" first. Then, the next and so on. As the large incentives become more scarce, students begin to see the value of making good choices both academically and by showing good character.
Building on last year's success in the 2nd semester, I want to use this system as my incentive for the entire year.
I believe teaching students to work hard and save long term are lifetime economic skills that will benefit them in and outside of the classroom. Students in poverty have little knowledge of economic choices as money is generally spent immediately and used for entertainment rather than thinking of the future. I also want students to learn to take care of and respect belongings.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
