Early Readers Love Picture Books

My Project

Books are powerful tools in my 1st grade classroom. They teach my students about new and exciting topics, expose them to diverse cultures and experiences, and provide opportunities for connection and inclusion. While my students spend the year learning to read independently, I also read to my students daily. Through these daily read alouds, I teach my students comprehension skills like identifying problems and solutions, naming the main idea and key details, sequencing, predicting, drawing conclusions, recognizing causes and effects, comparing and contrasting, and character analysis.

Research shows that students who have access to engaging books in their classrooms exhibit higher reading achievement, better comprehension, and an increased vocabulary.

These students interact more with books, spend more time reading, and exhibit more positive attitudes toward reading.

These books will be used for daily read alouds and will be housed in our classroom library for my students to read independently. My goal through this project is to develop and increase my students' reading and listening comprehension skills and to foster their love of reading.
