This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Ever thought about what it would be like not to have books to read at home? There are some children that are not able to have a wide variety of literature to read and experience in the home. Children need to experience a wide variety of literature to foster life-long reading.
My students are first graders that have a desire to absorb as much information through books as possible.
Currently, they attend a Title 1 school, in which most of the population is of low socio-economic status. This year our school qualified for free breakfast for all every day. However, our school is still a magnificent place to learn and grow.
My Project
The resources for this project are vital to its success. Resources include quality informational texts and backpacks for transportation of these texts to and from the home. My goal is for students to be able to take home books each weekend. Along with the books, the backpacks will include family activities that center around the books. Families will complete these activities and bring the backpacks back the next week. Each week students will be exposed to a new set of books and the cycle will continue.
As a educator, I think that it is important for families to support literacy development in the home.
However, I know that sometimes this is not always financially possible. With this project, I hope to provide students and families the opportunity to get their "hands-on" quality literature to share in the home. Students can now have more exposure to different levels of text and a wide variety of topics to increase reading and literacy skills.
