My students need a sketchbook, assorted fine tip washable markers to create their Early Art drawings, and also pencil sharpeners for the pencils already in the room.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Maybe someone in your family is an immigrant to our country? My children have all moved to the US without knowing the language, or having much on their backs. To say they are needy, is an understatement. But these students are eager to learn and absolutely love art and expressing themselves.
My students are studying in a district that is over 132 years old.
This district is very small and in the middle of a large city. Most of the students are immigrants and very poor. However, they all have one thing in common and that is the eagerness to learn and succeed. They have countless obstacles facing them, language, a new country, and a new culture.
Being able to draw and express themselves is an important stage in learning the new language, as well as communicating through visual forms their feelings and thoughts. They are highly talented students who absolutely love art! They are an inspiration to all their teachers! They have an unusual perspective about life in their new country, and a good sense of humor!
My Project
Early Art History Detectives Part 2 will enable another 8th grade class to participate. The students’ sketchbooks will contain drawings of different art concepts and standards relevant to each early art period. The students will create sketches in different art mediums; to communicate ideas, meanings and the purpose of each art period, putting into sketches the important aspects of each period. This will help them remember the images and information about the culture they are studying. The students will then analyze and interpret different issues and ideas from each culture in history. They will be able to draw conclusions about each art period and, perhaps, the significance of art through time.
Each student will be allowed to keep their sketchbook. Because my students are very artistic and don’t have much money, the sketchbook will become a valuable learning tool for each one. The fine tip colored markers and pencil sharpeners will be shared in other classes.
My art students will learn about 8 different periods in early art history.
They will experience the art information through a selection of videos, art posters, books and the computer. The eight periods we will be studying will be: Prehistoric, Pre-Columbian, Egyptian, Chinese, Byzantine, Greek, Roman and Medieval Art. The students will use their art books to record, to reflect and to imagine each period. It will be as if they are
Artists sent back in time to learn as much as they can about each different period of art.
They will have a rubric of different aspects of each culture that they are to discover and sketch. At the end of each early artistic period, we will show our sketches and discuss that culture. And at the end of the unit, we will try to analyze and summarize the discoveries we have made.
