My Students
My students live in a rural area and go to school in a Title I school. They face many challenges each day that students growing up in other areas don't have to deal with. School is their refuge. They're always very happy to come back each fall and sad to leave each summer. Living in a rural area, they love the outdoors and activities like hunting and fishing. They thrive on variety and I like to offer a wide range of activities in physical education that also incorporate other areas of their education. This helps in learning retention and excitement.
My Project
I'd like to do a unit that correlates with what students are learning about early American history and its settlers in other classes. Art, music and PE will be collaborating with regular classroom teachers when they start their early American settlers lessons. In PE, we'll use the portable PA to call the moves for barn dances (square dances), while in art, students will make yarn dolls (something the ladies might have been doing in a group together at a barn dance) and pottery, while the mandolin will be used by music students to provide the musical accompaniment to the barn dance.
This unit will truly combine American History, art, music and physical education into one big fun unit!
This variety of activities presented and done in a fun and stimulating way will help solidify these lessons in the minds of our students.
