My Students
Our brand new class of students with disabilities are ready to embrace literacy! We are eager to become better readers!
Our class is one of a kind at our school.
We are the only class with a 12:1:1 ratio (12 students, 1 teacher & 1 paraprofessional). Our class is made up of Kindergarten and 1st grade students who have varying disabilities ranging from autism to intellectual disabilities. Although our students have disabilities, it doesn't stop them from wanting to learn! All of our students have different learning styles and behaviors, but one thing they all enjoy are books. Our goal is to immerse them in a balanced literacy classroom where they can gain independence in their reading and writing skills.
My Project
Many of our students are new to school, so sitting for extended periods of time can be difficult. Getting a new carpet and a fun beanbag chair will provide exciting places where reading can take place! We would also like to introduce a listening center to the classroom. A listening center would be great for my students, especially those who are not yet readers, to be able to enjoy books independently. The selection of books we requested are books that they are already familiar with and will further their love of reading.
Many of our students come from low income families where literacy may not be a top priority.
It is my job as a teacher to provide an abundance of opportunities in a variety of ways for my students to learn!
