This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
There is nothing greater than watching a student engage with a new book. Their eyes light up and their smiles grow bigger and bigger as they delve deeper into the story.
The University of Texas Longhorns are a class of eager third graders who love to read new books.
Their favorite time of the day is our read aloud, when they get to listen to me read a chapter book of their choice. We use this time to practice comprehension skills such as visualizing the story and making predictions about what will happen next.
My Project
However, after hearing several children comment on how they wished they could read like me and how much they liked how I use different voices while reading, I knew this read aloud time could be used for so much more! The Longhorns are strong readers, but they are timid when it comes to reading out loud. They have not yet mastered the use of emotion when reading or changing ones tone to really bring a book alive. Therefore, I would like to offer each child a copy of our read aloud book so that we can practice fluency. Students will be able to follow along in the book and see where I change my voice and how that impacts the story being told. They will then be given the opportunity to emulate my reading or make it their own. This will give students excellent practice in reading with longer phrasing and using the punctuation in the story to direct their tone.
By becoming more fluent readers, the Longhorns will not only gain confidence in their reading, but also a greater understanding of the books they read.
Books will no longer be just of group of words separated by punctuation. Books will become complex stories that are meant to be brought to life through a readers voice!
