My students need 35 book titles including "Amelia Bedelia" and "Pizza, Pigs, and Poetry" that intrigue, interest, and inspire them along their paths toward becoming accomplished readers.

My Students
Danny Champion of the World. That was it for me. The book that changed me into a reader. My students have yet to meet their life changing author or book. They search my shelves, filled with the tattered remains of classes past, hoping to find something to fall in love with...
The students in my class amaze me every day.
They come from homes where different languages are spoken, breakfast is hard to come by and there are rarely books being read by anyone. Yet, every day they come to school eager to learn, giving it everything they've got. They are excited by science, love to do art, and are really turned on by math. However, their biggest accomplishment this year has been their growth as readers. The whole class has impressed me with their overwhelming desire to become better at reading. No matter their level, each student is constantly working toward improving their understanding of written materials. They scour our poorly stocked classroom library shelves daily on a continued search to find the "hidden treasure" that the perfect book would be for them. They trade, share and are constantly negotiating who gets which "prized" book next, all the while asking me if I have anything more for them. These are lifelong readers waiting to take off!
My Project
Books. Plain and simple. It is books that these students need. They have done the hard work of learning how to read and now they deserve to have the delight of finding a book that takes them away. The resources that I have requested for our classroom consist of the basics for starting a classroom library that holds a magical potential for all who search its shelves. They will have access to biographies, sports, science, and a wide range fiction. The students will be able to choose books for our "Silent Reading" time that have value for them instead of just being "whatever" books. They will be given the opportunity to explore multiple works by a single author or to learn about topics that truly peak their curiosity. The students will be able to feel proud of their classroom library, instead of knowing that they are having to search through cast-off books to find something of interest. These children need and deserve to have, what for most of us, is a normal access to books.
The transition from learning how to read into reading to learn is so important to young learners.
This is the moment in which they get to have choice, explore and become engaged on their own. The students in my class have learned how to read. Now, they are starving for books to intrigue, amuse, and interest them like never before. This is the critical time in which they can either become truly bored by their reading or forever curious about what the next book may hold.
