My students need balls, cones, jump ropes, and hoops that will encourage them to exercise and follow a healthy lifestyle, because Harlem is bereft of safe places to play.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students struggle to find safe places to exercise and play after school. The closest playground and soccer field is littered with garbage and drug needles. This school provides the students with a safe place to play but we have broken or no equipment for them to use in the gym.
The school population is made up of 88% Latino and 8% Black.
The students in West Harlem face a tough uphill battle with obesity and diabetes. Children today are not very active and need to be taught the advantages of athletics and staying physically fit. In Harlem, 48% of students are considered obese. This is an alarming number with obesity leading to diabetes and other negative outcomes. Students here love to run and play sports but do not have many opportunities. The school needs new equipment to help promote fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Many students will take the games they learn in school and continue to play them after school.
My Project
The students love to play sports but lack the resources. A lot of the equipment is old and broken or simply doesn't exist in the school. With the new equipment, students will learn new games they can play outside of school. They will also be able to exercise during the school day and learn how to lead a healthy lifestyle. I am requesting new basketballs, hula hoops, soccer balls and other similar items. I am also in need of a smaller basketball hoop for my elementary age students. The younger students have a lot of trouble shooting at a 10 foot hoop. With donations, the students can have a positive experience in Physical Education class.
The donation and new equipment will have a direct impact on the students.
They will be able to play games and exercise which helps reduce the number of students who are obese and overweight. Exercise also can help students focus in the classroom. Overall, the new equipment would be a huge step in the right direction for this school. The students need your help!
