My Students
I am a prekindergarten teacher in NYC. I have a group of very young and excited students. A majority of the students in my class have working parents who do not often have enough time to spend with them.
Parents send their children off to school and then head off to work, knowing that they can trust their child to our care for the day.
We try to create a warm environment where students are excited to learn. Topics that my students will learn this year will include water, plants, babies, where they live and all about themselves.
My new batch of Pre-Kindergartners will be entering school for the first time. Do you remember how scary the first day of school was for you? Or your own child? My goal is to make it a place where students will want to come each and every day.
My Project
Books can lead children to a different world. This is so very true. Children love books being read to them as they are young. As they get older, they learn to appreciate different genres of books. It opens up a whole new world to them. They learn about history, famous historians, get transported to lands far away where they learn about their cultures and histories. Books also are an outlet for students to learn that they are not alone suffering the hurt and worries around them. There are others who have faced similar problems, and have found ways to overcome their problems or ways to help others.
Being the new kid in school is never easy, but then again coming to school with worn, old dirty clothes isn't either.
Jacqueline Woodson and E.B. Lewis teamed up to write "Each Kindness", a story about the pervasive practice-among students of all economic backgrounds-of excluding those less fortunate. When a new student arrives midterm, head down, with broken sandals, she sits right next to Chloe, an African American girl. The teacher introduces the pigtailed new student as Maya, but hardly anyone says hello, nor does Chloe give a welcoming smile.
I am hoping that this story will help my students realize that its important to share and show kindness to all those around them, not just those who look like them.
