My Students
Have you ever listened to an instrument being played that is not in tune? Well... welcome to my guitar class of at least 30 guitars playing all at the same time. Because of time constraints and lack of a classroom, students need to quickly tune their own guitars to reach their maximum potential!
My students are future rock stars!
They come from various English/non-English speaking countries and homes, and attend a very large public elementary school in New York City. Half of our very diverse population has music class and while each student is very different, they all love music! I teach general education and special education students how to play guitar using an interest based curriculum. I piloted this program at the end of last year and would like to start off the year on the right foot with these tuners as key helpers!
My Project
Twenty guitar tuners will make a world of difference for my students' progress in guitar class. It will allow students to work in partners to tune their guitars so that when we exercise and play together, we sound awesome! I have tried training students to tune based on pitch, but it is a very, very difficult task for students who have not had previous exposure to formal music instruction. Keeping guitars tuned has been one of the major hurdles for me. Because I do not have a classroom, I teach guitar out of the cafeteria. Needless to say, there are a lot of people constantly walking through. One teacher told me her first reaction to my class was, "Wow, that looks so cool," but when she stopped to listen, her reaction changed to, "Wow, that sounds bad." The problem is that it is impossible for me, alone, to keep 35 guitars in tune. This project will make the difference between exposing students to the guitar, versus teaching students what it sounds like to play guitar correctly.
This project is so important for my guitar students.
They will be learning how to tune their instruments, an essential part of being independent musicians, while training their own ears to hear pitches. I am confident that with these tools we will transform our sound from scary to super... please help make E-A-D-G-B-E easy as 1-2-3 so that we can start rockin'!
