Dyslexics Can Read - SEER (Simultaneous Eye/Ear Reading) with Kindles!
Help me give my students a set of Kindle Fires to checkout. Students who struggle with decoding still want to read engaging texts. With a Kindle Fire, they can simultaneously read and listen to exciting, desirable texts.

My Students
"Education is the most powerful weapon for changing the world," Nelson Mandela famously said. Help these future innovators, contributors, and leaders gain the knowledge, skills, and experiences to improve our world. My students come from neighborhoods across the Omaha metro. In our unique public school, students develop their technology, leadership, and communication skills. In our extended, year-round program, students are engaged in inquiry, STEAM, voluminous reading, and innovative instruction. Every student also participates in after-school Enrichment, where they may choose from a wide variety of extracurricular courses.
Our students are curious, creative, and committed to leading in our school and communities.
They are curious about the world and how it works. They are creative in their approaches to learning and how they use tools and technology to communicate. They demonstrate their commitment to leadership inside and outside the school by participation and service. Our students are future world-changers. They are amazing.
My Project
Dyslexia affects 1 in 5 children and adults in the United States. Dyslexic children may struggle to read, but the desire to read exciting, engaging texts is strong! While we help the students gain reading skills, we can enhance their reading confidence.
Sometimes when students fall in love with what’s inside a book, it motivates them to read more.
Students with dyslexia are often smart enough to handle vocabulary at a much higher level than what they can read. Ear reading helps bridge that gap. With audiobooks, students can take in the same books that their peers are reading—just in a different format. Simultaneous Eye/Ear Reading (sometimes called Immersion Reading) is a technique where the student follows along with the visible text while listening to a professionally narrated audiobook version. This has many significant positive effects on reading motivation and performance.
With colleagues at WFS, we plan to have a checkout system for the Kindles so that students may experience immersive reading. We will use the electronic resources (audiobooks and ebooks) from our school library.
