My Students
"A picture is worth a thousand words" - this is so true! Students who are allowed to illustrate and design around their writing - even non-fiction - will write much more than students limited to looseleaf. I have witnessed this difference with my classroom writing experiences that feature art.
My New York City public school fifth graders are a mix of eager and sometimes struggling students, students who need encouragement and engaging activities to be inspired, and English language learners who face the additional obstacle of learning to write in a new language.
To help create enthusiasm for writing, I create assignments that focus on their critical thinking skills which also incorporate art, so that visual and kinesthetic learners are enticed to participate. Amazingly, the students write much more when they know that their final, published pieces can be rendered in book form, or with designed illustrations, and for my 21st century children, even printed on computer paper! The materials I am requesting will allow them to create their own fiction or non-fiction book. They will research and write a biography of their choice for a postage stamp, and additionally study social studies for postcard writing. These activities enhance the writing process and skills of the students.
My Project
A blank piece of paper is often daunting for adults. That is why it is so important that students have focused writing activities that incorporate decision making, research, art, and allow them to utilize the information they gain in planned and designed final published pieces. These different writing processes build their writing enthusiasm, their research skills, their writing skills, and their ability to complete a task in an organized sequence. By using the paper remnant kits I've requested, they also learn to be "green consumers" and understand that the writing process must be organized to conserve resources.
Writing is a fundamental skill, and if the students don't practice, then they are limited to the abbreviated communication forms they use with their technology.
Formal writing is a necessary skill in life and business, and these creative activities make formal writing instruction exciting to the students. If you fund this proposal they will create writing pieces they will keep and treasure, and they will be developing their skills as proficient and enthusiastic lifelong writers.
