Dynamic Dancers Need a Dynamite Dance Machine

My Students

The challenge facing my students is that most of them have not had the experiences with the fine arts that other students have. Many of them do not know what a theater is. When I attempt to describe these things to them, they respond as if it were not a real place. My wish is to take them someday.

They are bright enthusiastic middle school students who attend public school in New York.

There are about 240 6th and 7th grade students who attend dance twice a week for 45 minutes. The unique thing about this school is that it is mostly boys. Many of the classes are dominated by male presence but they are so attentive and energetic. Many of them may choose careers in dance or something related in the art field. Overall they are so motivated to do well in class. They love love love to perform!

My Project

Our dance class needs a good stereo with an ipod deck and an ipod to play and store music for our awesome lessons and in-class presentations. Currently my class is studying "Cultural Dance from Around the World." Music is an integral part of this unit because many of the cultures use music as enhancement for the movement. My class has a tiny CD player that amplifies very little sound and skips the music. The lack of proper sounds makes the unit less interesting because most of the cultures use fun music. If we are able to get a good stereo and ipod, I believe my students would focus more on the essence of the lesson and not on trying to fix the player. My students would be able to fulfill their learning about cultural dance and music for the unit will be able to see how cultural dances have shaped society over time and how society has shaped dance.

We simply need your help to afford my students a chance to be successful.

Having the proper music system to support this project is key in instilling a world of cultural and historical information. This may be their only opportunity to have this type of experience.
