This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a math resource teacher that spends my entire day going to different classrooms in different grade levels teaching math. Many kids struggle with math concepts because they don't understand how they will use it in the real world, or they struggle in math because they can't read the problems.

There are over 800 kids at our school.

Of those 800+ kids, 93% of them are economically disadvantaged and more than 70% of them are Hispanic, where Spanish is the main language spoken at home. Our students are hard-working kids that come to school lacking foundational skills in language acquisition, which causes them to struggle in all content areas with the more rigorous Florida State Standards. They also often do not have a support system at home that can help them with math to see connections between what they are learning in school and how it relates to the real world.

My Project

The DynaMath magazines will be used both in whole group and small group math lessons with our students. I will use relevant math articles from the publication to engage our students in the math that they are learning in the classroom, or to assess their understanding of the content through applying their learning to scenarios they read about in the publication. In small group lessons, I will build reading comprehension in the math content area through using articles to engage the students and sharpen their reading comprehension skills in a mathematics context. I will help the students make connections to how the strategies they learn in reading will help make them more successful in math.

The donations of these DynaMath magazines will increase the success of my struggling math students by helping them realize that math does exist in the real world, and that math is important in the real world, as well as motivate them to work harder in math to be more successful.
