Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are already enjoying helping maintain our current gardens. I want to teach them how beneficial and versatile growing plants are.

My students will learning how to dye fabric with natural dyes from the plants that will grow and take care of.

They will learn through experimentation which plants make the most potent dyes and how sustainable it is. Students will also learn how traditional cultures used plants to dye their fabrics.

I am requesting an indoors, hydroponic garden that students will be able to grow plants year round. This project is requesting galvanized garden beds to grow plants outside. In addition to the garden beds, I am requesting non-GMO seeds and onion bulbs. The vinegar and totes will help during the process of dyeing the cotton fabric bandanas and totes.

We will be comparing and contrasting the different ways to grow plants and seasonal plants and flowers. Students will learn the pros and cons of growing plants in an indoor hydroponic garden and in a traditional outdoors garden bed. They will learn how hydroponic gardens function and provide an alternative way to grow fresh food. Students will be responsible for assembling, and maintaining the gardens and plants. They will be comparing which plants are the strongest or weakest dyes for the fabrics using a note taker to keep their data and observations. They will create the criteria for comparing the natural dyes as weak or strong. They will research how to use the plants to dye; either by using it raw and/or cooking it. And in turn, learn how traditional cultures use plants to dye fabrics. Students will also compare natural dyes to synthetic dyes; learning about the benefits and negative implications of each dye.
