Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Second grade is when students' early reading skills take off. My students are excited and look forward to increasing their reading stamina by reading lots of books in class. The positive reading energy during independent reading time is contagious and everyone is on task, reading their books.

The students at this San Francisco public school are predominantly from low income families, considered at risk, and are second language learners.

Parents do not have the disposable income to buy basic school materials for their children to use at home. All supplies that can be provided at school will help students to acquire and assist positive learning abilities.

My Project

The students go through pencils weekly, with all the learning that they do through lots and lots of practice. With so much Creative Writing and writing about Reading, pencils need to be sharpened constantly. It's amazing how many pencil sharpeners have burned out from overuse.

For students to attain literacy skills, they need to READ!

The best way to facilitate improvement is to have them use books at their appropriate reading level, at home, in addition to school. Each child is expected to take home a book that reflects their independent reading level every day. Take home books experience lots of wear and tear, so protected folders are essential. Homework and notes home are also maintained as backpacks tend to be quite messy.

2nd graders still look forward to celebrating their birthdays. A colorful and silly celebratory card will definitely bring a smile to their faces.
