My Students

After describing the book The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, I looked out into the sea of fourth graders knowing that the majority of them want to read that book. My suspicions were confirmed when over 2/3 of them signed up for the only copy we had of the book.

I am a librarian in a school where many of my students come from single-parent families whose parent is working more than one job just to provide the necessities of life.

Most of my students live below the poverty line where anything beyond the necessities cannot be purchased. Reading is an avenue for my students to escape the hardship of their daily lives and begin an adventure beyond their imagination. The only way many of my students have access to books is through the school library, as they also lack transportation to get to the public library.

My Project

Limited library budgets have allowed me to only purchase one copy of each book, or only some books in a popular series. On a two week loan, some of the fourth graders described above who signed up for the wait list will not get to read The One and Only Ivan by the time they graduate from fifth grade the following year.

Your donation of these popular titles will allow my students to be fully immersed in reading books I know they love.

You will shorten the wait period so they can still read the book that inspired them during the book talk. Please help these kids!
