This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I would really like to use the materials requested in order to help teach my students various tabletop games, particularly Dungeons and Dragons, Pokémon the card game, and Magic the Gathering. I run the D&D and tabletop club at my school, and I have also recently extended that into an elective class. I do have some of my own supplies that I have been using, but it would be much more helpful to have some supplies that are specifically for the club that the students can use to learn the basics.

These supplies will not only allow my students to learn the fundamentals of these various games, but learn the social skills, mathematics, problem solving, and strategic and critical thinking needed in order to effectively play these games.

I do believe that there is a healthy mix of fun and strategy involved with these various games, and there are certainly creative and analytical skills that are learned when playing and learning these more complex tabletop games.

Dungeons and Dragons I believe is the most essential one, although I have requested only a few supplies in regard to it, as the primary tools needed are the rules found within the rulebooks, and an immense amount of creativity and imagination, as well as plenty of knowledge in math, statistics, and probability needed in order to use the dice required for play. Pokémon the Card Game, (and to an extent Magic) while from an outsider's viewpoint, may seem like a children's game, and while the fundamentals of it are simple enough for children to understand, the learning curve and expertise needed to become a "Pokémon Master" is surprisingly steep, as there are many competitive league players who know how to optimize their cards exceptionally well, which requires plenty of strategy.
