This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are in a Title 1 school, which means that they are able to receive free breakfast and lunch everyday due to their socioeconomic status. Many of them show up to class with just the clothes on their back, and I am just appreciative that they showed up willing to learn and better themselves. With that being said, many times they do not have the materials to be successful in school. Pencils, pens, markers, folders, notebooks, etc. are a luxury here, and mainly the teachers afford it to their students. With this help, I can give the students what they need whenever they need it to help them academically succeed. In our middle school classrooms, many of the students are below grade level for both reading and math, and the teachers do what is necessary to get them to grow to their fullest potential. We have access to reading and math applications online, but many of our students need “reader access” to help them understand online texts, and we don’t have the headphones to provide them with the environment needed for them to grow their reading comprehension and vocabulary capabilities. The mice I put in my cart help the students use their school-lended chromebooks when the mouse pads stop working because the chromebooks are from a loan from the pandemic. Students in my district do not get the supplies they need to succeed like other school districts with higher socioeconomic status, and teachers like myself are doing our best to help close the gap with the little we have to work with. Getting these supplies for my classroom would be a dream come true for both myself and my students!
