My Students

ASA students typically fight through many obstacles to attain their diploma. My students have dreams of a better future understanding that knowledge is the key. They deserve my best and I work to provide a classroom environment that is safe and equipped with all the tools they need to reach their goals.

All of my students have been touched by the violence in Chicago.

The fact that I can say "all" without waivering should clearly indicate the day to day struggles we face at ASA. Too many of my students struggle with anxiety in a community where safety is not guaranteed. Through uncertainty and fear, they come to to school.

Prior to coming to ASA, students have had at least one year in traditional public school but recognize the value of alternative education. Smaller classrooms allows us to meet the social and emotional needs of our students as well as their educational needs. I strive to create a learning environment where students feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, challenge themselves and achieve.

My Project

I have found that students work better in attractive and equipped classrooms. The first place students go to when entering my classroom is to the shelves to gather their notebooks and other materials for the class. I currently have 3 bookshelves on their last legs supported with duct tape. These shelves house student notebooks and folders, textbooks, and classroom supplies.

Multiple classes of students need a place to store their class materials.

Adequate shelving is a must have, essential to organizing the supplies for six classes of students. Replacing furniture has been a fiscal challenge but will greatly assist with classroom functionality. The shelves selected are of a higher quality that should last for many years of classroom use.
