My students need an incubator with a thermometer that they can see the hatching process and disinfecting spray to keep the equipment sanitary.

My Students
"That big ol' thing came out of that itty bitty egg?" That was the exclamation of surprise when the child saw the newly hatched duckling.
My students live in central Florida and attend a Title 1 school.
We have a population of students where 86% of the child qualify for free or reduced lunch program. Our students come from economically challenged homes. Some live with grandparents or other family members.
Our school is their place of safety. The teachers and support staff work very hard to provide our students with the things they need to be successful. We also try to provide them with interesting and meaningful experiences in the classroom.
My Project
My classroom has always included the hatching of ducklings and chicks for the past ten years. I incorporate this into my life science unit in the spring. The children learn about egg development through the candling process. We show the children the blood veins and sometimes even an embryo moves! They get so excited. When the eggs begin to hatch, I cannot teach any other subject except science.
The children have a mini hatching science journal. They form a hypothesis of what the chick or duck will look like when it hatches and how long it will take. They draw pictures of the candling process and development.
Many of my students have never had a pet or even seen a farm animal.
Hatching eggs in my classroom is a wonderful way to provide them with the experience of observing a live animal developing. There are students on campus in the upper grades that ask me if I have any chicks. This is a memory they have from my class that really made an impression and hopefully, will help them to love learning about science and nature.
