This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a first grade teacher in a Title I school. Our community is made up of hard working, caring and supportive multicultural families. My co-teaching partner and I are teaching the first grade curriculum in a Spanish and English dual language class. Half of the students are Spanish dominant and the other half are English dominant. The students are excited about learning in two languages! Their goal is to become biliterate - learn to read, speak, and write in two languages all while meeting first grade level expectations.

My Project

This is my and my co-teaching partner's first year in a dual language classroom. These books will help to continue to build our classroom library. The students will love reading popular fiction and non-fiction books at their reading level such as Froggy se viste, El Camino De Amelia, Asi me siento yo. Research shows that, "Developing proficiency in two languages is associated positively with greater cognitive flexibility and awareness of language, which contributes to academic achievement." Our first grade students will have the opportunity to enjoy reading these wonderful books in Spanish as they continue to grow on their journey to becoming biliterate!
