My Students
Most of my students have already had challenging life obstacles to overcome, despite only being in first grade. My students all come from low-income/high poverty neighborhoods and many of them have been affected by trauma early on in life. Despite all of this, my students walk into my classroom, eager to succeed, to learn, and most importantly, to be loved.
I teach at a Turnaround Network school in North Philadelphia where 100 percent of students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students come to school, not only to learn, but also to receive nourishment, love, and security. It is highly important for me to show them that they are valued and accepted. The environment I aim to create in my classroom is one where students are held to high academic expectations and guided in a warm and caring way.
My Project
One of the most important skills for first grade learners to master is recognition of sight words and phonemic patterns. These skills are essential to becoming a fluent reader as students need to be able to easily identify these words and patterns when they come across them while reading.
We practice this skill daily by using whiteboards to write our sight words for the week, as well as "sound out" words using phonemic patterns.
In the past, we have used Dry-Erase boards from the Dollar Store and Target to practice these skills and, while effective, they crumble after about 20 uses. We love our Dry-Erase boards and need to continue using them to grow our reading and writing skills. Please help us obtain quality Dry-Erase boards that will withstand all of our little hands eager to learn and to read!
