This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams" - Eleanor Roosevelt
On a daily basis in my math and science classroom, approximately 52 students are engaged in learning. I allow them to write on their desks, kidney table and on individual white boards with dry erase markers.
My 4th grade students come from poverty stricken homes, which means they do not come to school with school supplies.
I have two classes of 26 students each. Approximately 95% receive free lunch in school. Several students have disabilities, and one class is entirely made up of English Language Learners. Most supplies are provided to the students by the teacher. They know that within my 4 walls they are safe and loved. They have a desire to do well in school and are eager to learn. They are very friendly, helpful and loving children, who look forward to hugs and praise everyday. My students were astonished when I gave them each a white board marker and told them to solve the math problem ON THEIR DESK. I had to repeat, "Yes, write with the marker on the desk. It's okay. Its erasable!".
My Project
I incorporate center rotations four times per week. In one or more centers, the students are working with markers. During the teacher-led center, I encourage them to solve math problems by writing on the kidney shaped table with dry erase markers. Each student also has their own 1 ft x 1 ft white board at their group. Since the students are confined by space on the pages of their book, I find myself telling the students to put their book in their lap, grab their dry erase marker and work out their math problem on their desk. I want them to use critical thinking and practice different methods for solving their math problems. This has helped the students love math and are excited to come to class each day. (The best way to erase is the magic eraser.)
We conduct one science lab experiment per week. We only have plastic cups to conduct and observe the experiments. Test tubes would be very helpful in conducting less messy experiments
My students need white board markers, erasers and science experiment supplies.
It will help a great deal in making the students engage in learning, want to come to school and have fun while learning. My goal is for them to remember working really hard at solving those difficult problems and finally having that "ah ha" moment. I don't want them getting frustrated because they don't have any space to work out the problems. After 3 weeks, the markers I bought are drying out.
