This year I have started a brand new STEM classroom in my elementary school. We recently added a 3D printer to our classroom. My students are over the moon excited about the new 3D printer! They love seeing real science and discovering how things work. Many of my students had not seen or used a 3D printer before.
I am requesting a filament dryer and some colorful spools of filament for our 3D printer so that we can keep it printing each day!
Our first project was to make a key chain for every student and staff member in the building. One morning the key chains looked different, and a student asked me, "Why are these hairy?" I explained that they were not hairy, but there were small strings of filament in some places that they shouldn't be because filament must be kept very dry, and our pink filament was no longer dry enough to print with. We changed to a different color of filament. I am asking for this dryer for my classroom because the filament will have to be dried, and then it can be used again. We will use the dryer on a regular basis. Keeping filament dry also means that the printer will not clog up as much, and this will allow us to print more items.
I have also asked for some rolls of colorful filament so that we will have a better variety of colors for students to choose from. I have a few rolls, but I want to offer more choices to my students because they are so excited to make things with the 3D printer. Having more color choices and a filament dryer will keep my students motivated to learn more about 3D printing!
