Drumming to a World Beat: A Multicultural Music Journey

Help me give my students a hands-on multicultural learning experience provided by an accomplished music educator and percussionist.

My Students

The students in my school are eager for musical experiences. They especially enjoy using instruments, singing, and dancing. My students enjoy performing for audiences and each grade level presents a concert for the school and community.

Many of my students have not had the opportunity to travel outside of our county and state.

They welcome exposure to other cultures and are able to appreciate various forms of music and dance. Their joy is evident when they are on stage and they have performed musical styles including jazz, patriotic, Americana, and multicultural folk songs .

My Project

I would like to have an Artist in Residence work with my music classes in order to introduce the students to traditional ethnic instruments. The students will learn how music is used to educate, enlighten, and entertain in other cultures. This experience will engage students in creative interactive learning that targets academic standards across the curriculum. The music instruction will culminate in a schoolwide performance that incorporates percussion instruments from various world cultures. This performance will benefit students by increasing confidence, teamwork, and communication skills. Help me give my students the chance to participate in a unique and rewarding learning experience that will engage every child in my school.
