Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a community where their idea of success is not getting incarcerated, murdered, or addicted to drugs; so music class in more ways than one is the only safe place where they get to be themselves, build family-like relationships, have a creative outlet, and be exposed to what else the world has to offer.
My students are talented, passionate, hard-working, innovative, and have the potential to become more than what is expected of them.
Even with their daily obstacles that life throws at them, they always come to class with excitement and the willingness to learn. Music gives them another reason to keep thriving and persevere.
My Project
I am the new music teacher and am rebuilding the music program at my school from nothing, meaning, the music program was non-existent before I came. Currently, within the whole district, there is a shortage of instruments, so as music teachers we are finding creative ways to make sure all of our students get a chance to learn and play an instrument. Having a Drum Set in a band room is essential to building a music program. Not only is it an important instrument in a Jazz Band and Jazz Combos, but it is basically a kit of 7 percussion instruments in one. Instead of buying a bunch of percussion instruments separately, a Drum Set can cover a wide range of percussion parts and be versatile in ensembles, like Concert Band, Drumline, etc.
My students deserve this new opportunity and experience to explore who they are not just as musicians, but as people.
So many of them are excited to learn music, to express themselves, and just be exposed to new things. I also want the Drum Set for the handful of my students who already have some experience playing an instrument. This way we can have after school rehearsals for those who are more advanced and create an actual Jazz Band that plays all types of genres from swing to funk, from cumbia to rock. Not only do I want my beginners to get opportunities, but also allow my more advanced students to grow and not get stunted.
