The little musicians at my elementary school are excited to sing, dance and play their way into a new school year! Our students are going to create a welcoming and empowering classroom community in the music room this year by exploring the exciting world of drumming.
As they drum together, our students will learn to share, problem solve, communicate clearly, take risks, and express their emotions and ideas through rhythm and song.
They will focus on drum technique, creating percussion pieces in canon, rondo, and call and response form, and explore patterns through imitation, improvisation, and composition.
Throughout these drum lessons, students will use their names, their favorite parts of their identity, poetry by Amanda Gorman, and picture books "Looking Like Me" and "Your Name is A Song" to strengthen their courage, pride, and to develop a community of belonging. They will be using the words of these authors as a springboard for conversations about inclusivity and acceptance.
