My Students
My students in Far Rockaway, NY are extremely interested in music. As a new teacher to this school, I have only met them remotely, but I will be meeting them in person in the coming weeks.
So far the students that I have met remotely have proven to be, curious, and eager to delve into the hands on learning of a musical instrument.
Though our school has a budding instrumental music program, we would love to have more instruments to satisfy the growing demand for instrumental music instruction at our school.
I have seen my students become deeply affected by music that has a strong rhythmic beat; they want to move their bodies immediately!
My Project
I will use the musical instruments requested to teach lessons in African and Caribbean drumming. I am anticipating using a curriculum called World Music Drumming which I trained intensively in during the summer of 2018.
I plan on teaching lessons that will have a direct connection to students' cultural backgrounds.
The World Music Drumming program has impacted my teaching more profoundly than any other "professional development" experience has in the 24 years of my teaching career.
I hope to use my music program to help students social and emotional comfort and well being during their transition back to physical school.
