Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Coming to a high poverty school, I found that a drum circle was a great way to help the students learn music and community. 5 years ago there were 8 students and now I have 45 students. Finding buckets from the custodians and restaurants, my students need drum sticks and drums to be able to play.

The students are a diverse population of nearly 1200 students.

There are over 13 different languages spoken and over 78% receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch. With such a vibrant mix of cultures, music and dance is used to help the students better understand each other. One way has been to use a drum circle. Each year the interest grows in the drum circle. In the past two years the students of the drum circle have performed at the House of Blues and Fourth Presbyterian Church in downtown Chicago. The drum circle has explored music from West Africa, Thailand, Egypt, South America, the West Indies, and North America. The students have used 5 gallon buckets and created complex drum routines and performed Asian stick drumming. Besides playing percussion rudiments, the students learn to improvise drumming and movement. The students love to share their creations with audiences at school and in public. They also go to classrooms and help other students enjoy and explore drumming.

My Project

The four dozen drum sticks and 3 drums will help the drum circle be accessible to all those students that want to be in the drum circle. There were eight drummers when the drum circle began five years ago. Last year there were 25 students in the drum circle. This year there are over 45 students who want to participate in the drum circle. We just received additional 5 gallon buckets from our custodial staff, but need drum sticks and West African drums so more students are able to be members. The students practice once a week after school for over an hour and learn very complex routines. The students routinely visit the late pre-K and Kindergarten classes and share their learning with those students and let the young children explore the drums. The students are very excited to begin drumming, and I hate to turn anyone away because there are not enough materials. These instruments will also be accessible to the whole school to use in music classes.

Without additional drum sticks and instruments, the drum circle will not be accessible to students who need to learn skills in listening, community-building, teamwork, communication and self-esteem.

The drum circle has been a fun way for students to succeed at school. Besides drumming, they have designed and created drums made out of large aluminum cans. This year they will create frame drums out of wood and tape. All students are encouraged to respect each other while being in the ensemble.
