This project will bring world drumming and music to the rural, elementary music room, for students in first through fifth grade. The main goals of this project are to build a sense of community and broaden the students' knowledge of music from different cultures creating more accepting citizens.
Students will clearly communicate with one another and value cooperative teamwork.
Students feel immediate success while drumming because they are able to make and explore sounds even before they learn “proper” technique.
World drumming provides students a positive outlet for expressing emotions. Social-Emotional Learning is at the forefront of many conversations in education today. Drum circles have been proven to provide an inviting environment, conducive to creating music, connecting with others, enhancing student attention and emotional awareness, and empowering participants. Robert Friedmann suggests in a publication that drumming enables people to cross the barriers of language, status and education, and eventually enriches the ability to celebrate differences.
This well-rounded approach to making music engages the learner from multiple perspectives using instruments, the voice, body percussion, and movement. Participants in drum circles are capable of achieving a present state of awareness, a sense of belonging, the ability to express themselves, the confidence to lead, and can be healed from underlying traumas leaving participants in a joyous mood.
Over 260 students would benefit from the use of the world percussion instruments each school year. Over a span of 30 years over 6000 students could benefit from the instruments. I would attend an in-depth course in the World Music Drumming curriculum in the summer. The training would assist me in learning techniques to implement a world drumming component in my elementary music classroom and school district.
