Drumming Around The World - Part 1

My students need African drums as part of their study of world music.

My Students

Every day in my classroom my students sing songs, play games, move to music and play instruments representing cultures from around the world. African drums will provide a great a fantastic avenue to study the music of Africa.

My students are wonderful musicians who love to study music from around the world.

Being a school that has an international student population means that students take great delight in sharing the music and culture from their home country. In order to provide a global perspective to my students we need to augment our instrument collection to include African drums.

My Project

My students will use these African drums as part of a unit of study focusing on the many musical traditions found in the countries of Africa. We will use these instruments for the joy of drumming together and as a way to accompany our singing. Students in both the 3rd grade and the choir will use these drums as part of upcoming performances where students will dance and sing while other students accompany the singing on a variety of pitched and unpitched percussion including these drums.

This project will make a difference for my students by ensuring that our study of world music is both authentic and meaningful.

Having a real instrument to play will provide a powerful learning experience as students work together to first play the steady beat and then ever more complex rhythmic patterns together in harmony. Thank you for helping to provide authenticity and global context to musical learning of my students.
