My Students
Let's face it... EVERY KID WANTS TO PLAY THE DRUMS! But how often do they actually get to sit on the throne and play an actual drum set? This drum set is perfect for my elementary age students and is great for motivating those who struggle to play pitched instruments like guitar.
Many of my K-5 students live in an inner city housing project and struggle economically.
The area where I teach is rich with culture, with children and families flocking from many different continents and countries, speaking various languages, with many different backgrounds. Our large school includes students with a vast diversity of interests and educational abilities, from self-contained special education classes to enrichment classes on each grade level.
My Project
Last year was my first year as the music teacher at my school and I stepped into a position that severely lacked materials. Near the end of the year, I was able to get a set of guitars to use for teaching. I piloted the guitar program the last few months of school and found that MOST students were motivated and excited by the guitar. However, the other students, the at-risk students who are a step away from giving up, needed something more to keep them motivated. I believe having a drum set would not only accompany our guitars during performances, but would be a motivational tools for those at-risk kids who need a reason not to give up!
This project will enrich the music program at my school.
I have seen how music can change the attitudes of children and can be a bright spot in a sometimes unappealing school day. I had a set of drum sticks this year and students were begging to use them in every single class. That being said, I believe that this drum set just might be the reason that some of the students I teach will want to come to school each day!
