My Students

Let's get this beat started! My percussion students have made due with improper mallets and equipment for too long!

We are a Title 1, inner city school in CT.

I teach instrumental music and band to grades 4-8. In my experience, many of the best percussionists I have taught have greatly benefited from being in band. Being a percussionist requires focus, patience, and attention to detail, and all these things have helped my students in other areas of their school work. Being in band, for my students, is a privilege. Students have to be doing well in their classes and keep their behavior in check in order to participate. I have seen students turn around with school work because playing the drums had become an incentive!

My Project

We've made due with improper mallets in the past, but as my band grows and advances, they need to have the right equipment to prepare them for high school and to keep our own drums in good shape. Our rehearsal space is a cafeteria auditorium, so we need drum pads to use in rehearsals to control the volume that the drums produce. We don't have any stands for the drum pads that we have; currently, we use inverted music stands. My students deserve to have good, proper equipment! They are hard working, dedicated, and inspired musicians! They know that we don't have the proper mallets for marching band, but they have had to accept the fact that we don't have the money in the budget for these items. School budgets are cut every year, and our administration works with us to get us our essentials; sadly, our drum mallets and drum pads have been put off for far too long.

My students deserve the same opportunities and equipment as any other school's band!

Making due with what we have is no longer o.k. when we are stepping up the difficultly level of music and musicianship. With your help, we will be improving the quality of our drummers performance and outlook on what it means to be a percussionist!
